Planning a Grand Teton elopement? As a wedding and elopement photographer, it’s one of my favorite locations.

Grand Teton National Park is in northwestern Wyoming and surrounded by breathtaking scenery. Its jagged mountain peaks, alpine lakes, and wildflower meadows make it a perfect backdrop for an elopement.

In this guide, I’ll cover everything you need to know about getting married in Grand Teton. Learn about permits, ceremony locations, planning tips, and photography packages.

TL;DR: You need a permit to elope in Grand Teton National Park. Groups of 12 or fewer use a small dispersed permit. Larger groups need a site-specific permit. Applications open December 4th each year, and popular spots fill fast. Elopements typically cost between $4,000 and $18,000, depending on your photography package, guest count, and activities.

Can You Elope in Grand Teton National Park?

Yes — Grand Teton is one of the most beautiful places to elope in the US. The park is in Wyoming surrounded by mountains, lakes, and meadows. You can elope at Grand Teton National Park year-round, but you’ll need to get a permit for your specific location. It’s also a great place for a camping elopement for couples who want an adventurous experience.

Grand Teton Elopement Permit: What You Need to Know

There are two permit options for eloping in Grand Teton National Park: a small dispersed ceremony permit and a large site-specific ceremony permit.

Permit applications open early December each year and dates fill up quickly, so apply as soon as possible. The park requires a minimum of 30 days to process your application.

Small Dispersed Ceremony Permit

The small dispersed ceremony permit is ideal for a private elopement or for inviting just a few loved ones. It’s available for groups of 12 people or fewer, including your photographer, officiant, and any guests. You can request access to permitted locations. You’ll also have your spot to yourselves since only one permit is issued per location per day.

Note: Prohibited areas include Jenny Lake Trail, Jenny Lake Overlook, Hidden Falls, Inspiration Point, String Lake, and other high-traffic areas.

Large Site-Specific Ceremony Permit

The large site-specific ceremony is for weddings with 12 to 40 people, and permits are available from mid-May to mid-October. Only one permit is available per day, so you’ll have the space to yourselves. You can access the site for one hour, including setup, the ceremony, and photos.

If you’re getting married at one of the park’s chapels or lodges, a National Park Service permit isn’t required.

Grand Teton Elopement Locations

Schwabacher Landing

Max ceremony size: 25 people
Time of year: Mid-May to mid-October

Schwabacher Landing sits at the end of a trail easily accessible from a parking area. The ceremony site offers a beautiful view of Snake River and the Tetons reflecting in the water. There are also a few benches for seating and some trees for shade — ideal for a comfortable ceremony, even on sunny days.

Colter Bay Swim Beach

Max ceremony size: 40 people
Time of year: Mid-May to mid-October or year-round for smaller groups

Colter Bay Swim Beach sits next to Jackson Lake with sweeping views of Mount Moran and the Teton Range across the water. It’s the most accessible Grand Teton elopement location, with restrooms, paved pathways, picnic tables, and ample parking nearby.

The site can host up to 40 people during summer and early fall, and up to 12 year-round.

Snake River Overlook

Max ceremony size: 25 people
Time of year: Mid-May to mid-October or year-round for smaller groups

Snake River Overlook offers a stunning view of the Snake River winding through the valley with the Tetons rising behind it. There are paved trails and nearby parking for easy access. This area is especially beautiful in the fall when the foliage turns gold.

The site can host up to 25 people during summer and early fall, and up to 12 year-round.

Glacier View Turnout

Max ceremony size: 25 people
Time of year: Mid-May to mid-October or year-round for smaller groups

Glacier View Turnout offers one of the most unobstructed views of the entire Teton Range. It’s located right off Highway 89, about 20 minutes from Jackson — easy to reach if you’re getting ready in town. The site is level and accessible, with plenty of parking.

The site can host up to 25 people during summer and early fall, and up to 12 year-round.

Mountain View Turnout

Max ceremony size: 25 people
Time of year: June to mid-October, plus May and October for smaller groups

Mountain View Turnout is perfect for couples who want a more remote location to exchange vows. That said, it’s close to parking and easily accessible once you arrive. This ceremony site is closer to the mountains than any other. It’s also close to other beautiful areas to explore and take photos.

The site can host up to 25 people during the summer and early fall or up to 12 people in May and October.

Small and Dispersed Locations

Max ceremony size: 12 people
Time of year: Year-round

If you’re planning an intimate elopement or adventure ceremony, the small, dispersed locations give you a ton of great options. These are more private locations throughout the park, plus the large ceremony sites if they aren’t already reserved.

The small, dispersed locations are perfect for a just-us elopement or a small ceremony with a few loved ones. There are a few prohibited locations, including busy areas like Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point. Otherwise, you can choose just about any location by giving coordinate points on your application. This lets you choose your ideal scenery, whether it’s a mountain backdrop, an alpine lake, or a peaceful meadow.

Chapels at Grand Teton National Park

Max ceremony size: About 100 people
Time of year: Year-round

The park has two chapels: Chapel of the Transfiguration (St. John’s Episcopal Church) and Chapel of the Sacred Heart (Our Lady of the Mountains) at Grand Teton. These locations are ideal for a traditional ceremony surrounded by the park’s gorgeous scenery.

To have your ceremony at one of the chapels, you’ll need to arrange directly with the venue. Keep in mind that the cost of these locations is a bit more than the permit site within the park.

Lodges at Grand Teton National Park

Max ceremony size: Depends on location
Time of year: Summer and fall

Grand Teton has several lodges inside the park, perfect for a small wedding getaway. You can invite a few loved ones and spend time together all in one place. While the max guest count varies by location, most lodges accommodate only an intimate ceremony. Contact the lodge directly for details about availability and ceremony options.

Best Time of Year for a Grand Teton Elopement

My favorite time for a Grand Teton National Park elopement is summer for a perfect mountain and adventure-inspired wedding day. That said, here’s what you can expect each season:

  • Summer – Summer is peak season at Grand Teton. The weather is warm, wildflowers are blooming, and all ceremony sites are open. For fewer crowds and great lighting for photos, I recommend an early morning ceremony during the summer.
  • Fall – A Grand Teton elopement during fall is stunning. Golden aspen trees, fewer crowds, and beautiful weather allow for an incredible experience.
  • Winter – The park becomes a gorgeous winter wonderland with snow-covered landscapes. While large site-specific locations aren’t available, it’s the perfect time of year for an adventurous elopement at a small, dispersed site. It’s also great for couples who want to enjoy skiing nearby in Jackson Hole.
  • Spring – Spring is the least popular time of year to get married at Grand Teton. There is usually still snow around the park, and the weather can be unpredictable. There may also be road closures during this time.

Tips for Planning Your Grand Teton Elopement

Make the most of your elopement at Grand Teton National Park with helpful planning tips.

  • Apply for your permit early – Applications open in early December each year. Popular sites get booked quickly, so submit your application as soon as possible and list alternate locations and dates.
  • Choose the right time of year – Summer and fall offer the best weather and scenery. Winter can also be great for couples who enjoy snow and cold weather.
  • Understand the guidelines – Grand Teton National Park doesn’t allow drones, arches or structures, confetti, amplified sound, or decor beyond a bouquet or vow books. It’s also important to follow Leave No Trace guidelines to leave the park better than you found it for others to enjoy.
  • Plan around the light – Golden hour, just after sunrise and before sunset, offers the best lighting for photos. Sunrise is also great for an intimate experience without the crowds.
  • Keep your guest list small – The permit system is designed for small gatherings, which are easier to manage and allow for more flexibility with location options. I recommend inviting just a few close loved ones for a more personal experience.
  • Hire an elopement photographer – A photographer that offers planning support, like myself, can help you every step of the way. Not only do I capture photos on your special day, but I can also help you find the best location, plan the perfect timeline, and sort out logistics.
  • Plan elopement activities – Grand Teton offers so many fun activities for couples. Whether it’s hiking at Cascade Canyon or Taggart Lake, kayaking around Jenny Lake, or floating down the Snake River, there’s something fun for every couple. Jackson is also nearby, offering tons of outdoor activities, great food, and live entertainment.

Grand Teton Elopement Cost: What to Budget

Getting Your Wyoming Marriage License

Getting legally married in Wyoming is relatively straightforward by following these guidelines:

  • Both partners must apply for and pick up their marriage license in person at the local County Clerk’s Office
  • You must be 18 or older and present a valid photo ID to get married in Wyoming
  • The marriage license fee is $30 (cash, check, or card)
  • The license is valid for one year from the date of issue and can be used anywhere in Wyoming
  • You’ll need two witnesses (18 or older) at your ceremony
  • The completed license must be returned to the County Clerk within 10 days after the ceremony

If you’re coming from out of state, you can get your license right in Jackson at the Teton County Clerk’s Office at 200 S. Willow St. I’m also ordained and happy to officiate your ceremony if we’re working together.

Grand Teton Elopement FAQs

Do you need a permit to elope in Grand Teton National Park?

Yes. All couples need either a small dispersed ceremony permit (for 12 or fewer people) or a large site-specific ceremony permit (for up to 25 or 40 people, depending on the location). The permit fee is $200 and is non-refundable. Applications open in early December for the following year.

When should I apply for a Grand Teton elopement permit?

You should apply for your elopement permit as early as possible. Popular sites fill up fast, especially during summer and fall. The NPS requires applications at least 30 days before your ceremony, but submitting early gives you the best chance at your preferred date and location.

What is the best time of year for a Grand Teton elopement?

The best time really depends on the experience you’re looking for, but summer and fall are the most popular seasons. Summer offers warm weather and full access to all ceremony sites. Fall, especially mid-September through mid-October, is ideal for colorful foliage.

Can I bring my dog to my Grand Teton elopement?

While pets are allowed in the park, they’re restricted in many areas. For example, you can’t have pets on hiking trails or at ceremony sites.

If you want your pet to join you, I’d be happy to chat about the best dog-friendly elopement locations.

How long is a Grand Teton elopement ceremony permit?

Site-specific ceremony permits are valid for one hour. This includes arrival, setup, the ceremony itself, and photos. You can also take photos around the park after your ceremony — I love exploring with couples!

“Brooke was the perfect choice for our wedding day! We had a micro wedding at Sapphire Point in August. I had never been to Sapphire Point and Brooke was so helpful suggesting vendors, picture locations, parking, marriage license info etc. She was so kind and helpful before and during the whole process and was a large part of why the day went so smooth. She does so much more than just show up and take pictures, Brooke will truly go out of her way to make your wedding day perfect! The photos are gorgeous and I keep getting so many compliments! I truly cannot recommend her enough!”

"Brooke was a large part of why our day went so smooth and will truly go out of her way to make your wedding day perfect!"

We chose Brooke to capture our Colorado elopement and she did exactly that and more. She made it easy to plan our day out with locations and timelines so that we could focus on ourselves. We decided last minute to change our afternoon/evening elopement to a 6am sunrise one so beat the heat of the day. Brooke accommodated us without hesitation and even created a new timeline for us so that we knew where to be for the perfect sunrise. She was kind and understood what we wanted in terms of our elopement and we are so grateful to have her capture the day. Our photos turned out beautiful and truly helped us relive the day. I would recommend Brooke to anyone wanting their special day photographed.

Brooke not only photographed our mountain elopement beautifully, but she put so much thought into the details and knew all of the answers the questions I didn’t even know to ask. She really puts a lot of thought into each photo and brings her expertise while still remaining very open to what we wanted and ideas we had. She even helped pick the perfect spot for us and advised us on the logistical details like securing a reservation at the mountain lake where we wanted our ceremony. She is SO easy to work with and very friendly and chill. My husband and I are super awkward in front of a camera but she made it so natural and easy - and the shots came out better than we could have imagined.

Brooke is many things; talented, calm, flexible, experienced/ knowledgeable, patient, incredibly responsive, organized, resourceful in a pinch, supportive, creative, professional yet a blast to work with, and goes above & beyond w her clients. Our wedding was a spectacular dream and we couldn't be more grateful that she made that single day last forever. Whether she's photographing nature or an intimate event, her pictures tell a story of peace, love, whatever your vision may be. We couldn't recommend her more and we look forward to booking with her for all of our vow renewals, seasonal and family pictures for as long as she'll have us.

Working with Brooke was a dream come true! Before we even met, my husband Brent and I were impressed by her portfolio. After meeting, we were even more convinced that her photography skills and knowledge, and her fun and easygoing personality were exactly what we were looking for in an elopement photographer. Brooke was able to take our vision and facilitate everything so that it worked out beautifully, especially when it came to finding the perfect location (the incredible mountains surrounding Ouray). Throughout the entire planning process, she was honest and flexible, and made it clear that her goal was for us to be 100% happy. In the end, her creativity and our happiness totally shine through in every single photo.

"Throughout the entire planning process, she was honest and flexible."

I can't begin to express my gratitude for the intimacy and beauty behind Brooke's photographs. In capturing our wedding day, she went above and beyond to document our story, our families, and the depths of our love in ways that I'll forever be grateful for. Brooke has an eye for not only capturing the adventure and magic of your love, but deeply connects with your personal story, understands your relationship, and then gives that back in the most incredible way. She is truly an artist and tells your story in an authentic and creative way for you to look back on for years to come. We are forever grateful to Brooke for spending the time to get to know us, our story, and capturing the memories that we'll relive for years to come.

“If you're contemplating which photographer to go with, THIS IS YOUR SIGN TO CHOOSE BROOKE!!!! She is so so so talented and was able to capture our elopement exactly how I pictured and wanted! We eloped in Ridgway, CO this past September and she was so helpful figuring out picture locations, recommendations of timeline for the day, and just made the whole day feel so smooth. She schedules multiple check ins, phone calls, etc., leading up to the big day to ensure everything is as you want it. Brooke has such a calming, down to earth presence and is one of those awesome people you feel like you've known forever after just the first time of meeting."
