Hurricane Ridge
Best for: Easily accessible sweeping mountain views
Special use permit: Required
Accessibility: Easy, with drive-up access and optional trails of varying lengths
Availability: May – October (weather dependent)
Hurricane Ridge is in Olympic National Park and sits above Port Angeles with panoramic views of the Olympic Mountains. It’s one of the most accessible places for a mountain elopement. You can drive straight up the mountains for picture-perfect scenery or hike for a more adventurous experience.
North Cascades National Park
Best for: An adventurous elopement off the beaten path
Special use permit: Required
Accessibility: Moderate, with some drive-up spots and many locations that require hiking
Availability: June – October (weather dependent)
The North Cascades is one of the best places for an adventure elopement in Washington State. It has over 300 glaciers, rugged alpine peaks, and cascading waterfalls. It’s also a bit more remote than other locations so you can have a peaceful experience exploring nature without big crowds.
Mount Rainier National Park
Best for: Iconic Pacific Northwest scenery with wildflowers and glaciers
Special use permit: Required
Accessibility: Easy to moderate, with drive-up overlooks and hikes for all levels
Availability: May – October (weather dependent)
Mount Rainier National Park is one of Washington’s most popular elopement spots and for great reason. The diverse landscape is gorgeous, with alpine meadows and lakes, massive mountain peaks, and forests. Whether you want a relaxed elopement in nature or an adventurous experience, this is the perfect place for it.
Snoqualmie Pass & North Bend Area
Best for: A pet-friendly elopement and easy access to Pacific Northwest scenery close to Seattle
Special use permit: Not required
Accessibility: Easy to moderate, with trails for all levels and some drive-up options
Availability: Year-round, with best conditions May – October
Just 45–60 minutes east of Seattle, this area is in the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. It’s one of the most accessible and unique spots for a forest elopement in Washington. Couples enjoy the mossy trails, waterfalls, and mountain backdrops without a long drive. Dogs are also welcome, so it’s perfect for a pet-friendly elopement.
Ruby Beach
Best for: A stunning beach elopement
Special use permit: Required
Accessibility: Easy, with a short trail from the parking lot to the beach
Availability: Year-round, with best conditions April – October
Ruby Beach is in Olympic National Park and one of the most beautiful places to elope along Washington State’s coastline. Sea stacks, driftwood, and dark sand make for a unique backdrop. There are also tons of other beautiful areas nearby if you want to explore and take photos in several places. Ruby Beach is also dog-friendly, so fur babies can join for your special day.
San Juan Islands
Best for: Waterfront views and a relaxed elopement vibe
Special use permit: Varies by location
Accessibility: Easy, with mostly flat terrain (ferry or seaplane required to reach the islands)
Availability: April – October
The San Juan Islands are a group of islands off the northwest coast of Washington, accessible by ferry from Anacortes. Each island offers a unique experience — Orcas Island is dramatic and mountainous, San Juan Island has lavender farms and lighthouses, and Lopez Island is quiet and laid-back. This is the perfect experience for couples who want something different yet gorgeous and relaxing.

Book an Elopement Photographer
Hiring an elopement photographer who also helps with planning is the best way to simplify your elopement and bring your vision to life.
Many photographers, like myself, offer guidance leading up to and during your elopement. When I work with couples, I not only capture the special moments of your wedding day but also offer location scouting, timeline creation, and vendor recommendations to help you plan your elopement.
Choose Your Location
Think about the vibe that feels most like you as a couple. Love hiking? Go for the mountains. Prefer something chill and scenic? A beach or island elopement is a great fit.
When choosing your location, consider accessibility, permits, and your ideal season. Your photographer can also help you pick your location based on your ideal experience.
Plan Your Day
To plan your elopement, start by picturing your perfect day. Consider personal touches and activities that are special to you and your partner.
When you’re planning, consider the following:
- Time of day – Sunrise and golden hour offer the best light for photos. You could also have a full-day or multi-day elopement if you want to add in some extra adventure.
- Guests – Decide if it’s just the two of you or a small group. You can always celebrate with friends and family before or after.
- Activities – Include meaningful experiences like a hike, picnic, or a champagne toast.
- Vows – Share traditional wedding vows or write your own vows for a personal touch.
- Flexibility – Leave room for unexpected weather and surprises. Some of the best moments come from the unplanned ones.
Handle the Legalities
Here’s what the legal marriage process looks like in Washington State:
- Apply for a marriage license online – Apply in the county where you plan to hold your ceremony. Submit at least three days before your wedding date. Your license is valid for 60 days.
- Pick up your license in person – Both of you need to show valid photo IDs and pay the license fee, which varies by county.
- Have an officiant and two witnesses – I officiate for couples I work with. Witnesses can be guests or willing bystanders.
- Apply for a ceremony permit – Required for most national parks and some other public lands. See the locations section for specifics.
Note: Some out-of-state couples prefer to handle legalities at home before traveling for their elopement.
