Among the Pines Photography

Hurricane Ridge is one of the most breathtaking areas in Olympic National Park. It’s easily accessible, with trails ranging from easy strolls to more advanced hikes. As an elopement photographer, it’s one of my favorite places to join couples for their special day.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through everything you need to know to plan your Hurricane Ridge elopement. Learn about permits, timing, ceremony spots, and what to expect on your wedding day.

Why Elope at Hurricane Ridge?

Hurricane Ridge is one of the best places for a Washington State elopement because it checks every box for a memorable experience.

  • Picture-perfect scenery – Hurricane Ridge sits at an elevation of 5,200 feet and offers panoramic views of the Olympic Mountains and the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
  • Accessibility – While you can hike around this area, it’s also an accessible spot for an easy elopement. The parking area has incredible views just steps away.
  • Variety – Hurricane Ridge is perfect for a quick, intimate vow exchange or a full-day adventurous elopement.
  • Wildlife – There’s a good chance you’ll see wildlife during your elopement, including birds, deer, and elk.
  • Fewer crowds – Weekdays and early mornings are perfect for an intimate ceremony and pictures.

How to Elope at Hurricane Ridge (Step-by-Step)

1. Book Your Photographer

Booking your elopement photographer first makes the rest of the planning process so much easier. A good elopement photographer isn’t just there to take photos — they help with the entire experience.

With my elopement packages, I offer location scouting and full planning support, so you’re never figuring things out alone. We can talk through your vision, find the perfect location together, and create your ideal timeline.

2. Choose Your Date & Location

June through October is the best time for reliable weather and road access. Weekdays are far less crowded than weekends. Sunrise and golden hour sessions are my favorite because they offer the most magical lighting for photos.

Hurricane Ridge has several ceremony spots, each with its own vibe. While you can explore and find the perfect location to exchange your vows once you’re there, here are a few places to have in mind:

  • Visitor Center Overlook – This is the most accessible option, with wide-open mountain views right from the parking area. It’s ideal for couples who want stunning scenery without a hike. You can also have a few loved ones join you.
  • Hurricane Hill Trail – Take a moderate 1.6-mile hike to 360-degree views of the Olympics and the Strait of Juan de Fuca. This is a go-to for an adventure and gorgeous ceremony photos.
  • High Ridge Nature Trail – This is a short, easy trail. The views are stunning year-round, and the wildflowers are beautiful during the summer.

3. Get Your Permits & Passes

When you arrive at Hurricane Ridge, you’ll need an entrance pass for each vehicle.

If your celebration is five or more people, you’ll also need to apply for a Special Use Permit before your elopement day. This includes you, your partner, the photographer, and any guests.

4. Plan Your Day

One of the best parts of an elopement is that you get to plan an experience around what’s actually important to you. Here are a few ways you might spend your Hurricane Ridge elopement day:

  • Relaxed & intimate – Arrive at sunrise, exchange vows at the overlook, enjoy a picnic breakfast, and spend time exploring
  • Adventure-focused – Hike Hurricane Hill for your ceremony, spend the afternoon wandering around, and catch golden hour on the way down
  • Mix of both – Start with a slow morning in Port Angeles, head up for a mid-morning ceremony, and end the day exploring the area

You might also enjoy a few other activities to create special memories on your elopement day. Fun ideas include a champagne toast, a first dance, and a scenic drive.

5. Book Your Trip

Hurricane Ridge is about 40 minutes from Port Angeles, which is the main hub for most couples visiting the area. Seattle-Tacoma International Airport is the closest major airport, about three hours away. Fairchild International in Port Angeles is also nearby and offers limited regional flights.

Where to stay:

  • Port Angeles – The most convenient base with lots of hotels, vacation rentals, and restaurants close to the park
  • Lake Crescent area – A more scenic area with lodges and cabins right surrounded by nature
  • Heart O’ the Hills Campground – Located inside the park on the road to Hurricane Ridge and a fun option if you’re planning a camping elopement experience

Best Time of Year for a Hurricane Ridge Elopement

The best months to elope at Hurricane Ridge are June through October. The road to the ridge usually opens for full access by late May or early June, depending on the weather. By late October, it has weekend-only access due to snow, and it often closes during winter.

Here’s a quick breakdown of what to expect throughout the year:

  • May – Roads may still have closures, possible snow, and fewer crowds
  • June – Park opens daily and wildflowers start blooming
  • July – August – Peak season with colorful blooms, warm weather, and more crowds
  • September – Beautiful weather, fewer crowds, and fall foliage
  • October – Cooler weather, beautiful fall colors, and weekend-only access later in month
  • November – April – Not recommended due to snow and unpredictable road access

Hurricane Ridge Elopement: FAQs

Do you need a permit to elope at Hurricane Ridge?

It depends on your group size. Groups of 5 or more, including the couple and photographer, need a $50 Special Use Permit from Olympic National Park. Groups of 4 or fewer only need to pay the standard park entrance fee.

What is the best time of year for a Hurricane Ridge elopement?

June through October offers the most reliable access and weather. September and early October are especially great because there are fewer crowds, fall colors, and comfortable temperatures. Always check road conditions beforehand.

Can you bring a pet to your Hurricane Ridge elopement?

While pets are welcome in parking areas and picnic areas at Hurricane Ridge, they’re not allowed on trails. If you’re planning a hiking elopement and want to bring your pet, I’d love to help you find the perfect location.

How much does a Hurricane Ridge elopement cost?

Most couples spend between $4,000 and $8,000 total, but exact elopement costs depend on the photography package, travel, accommodations, and vendors. Hurricane Ridge itself is low-cost because your main expenses are the park entrance fee and the special-use permit (if applicable), making it a great location for an affordable elopement.

Can you elope at Hurricane Ridge without hiking?

Yes. The Visitor Center Overlook has incredible mountain views with no hiking required. It’s one of the most accessible alpine ceremony spots in the entire Pacific Northwest, making it an ideal option for couples of all fitness levels.

“Brooke was the perfect choice for our wedding day! We had a micro wedding at Sapphire Point in August. I had never been to Sapphire Point and Brooke was so helpful suggesting vendors, picture locations, parking, marriage license info etc. She was so kind and helpful before and during the whole process and was a large part of why the day went so smooth. She does so much more than just show up and take pictures, Brooke will truly go out of her way to make your wedding day perfect! The photos are gorgeous and I keep getting so many compliments! I truly cannot recommend her enough!”

"Brooke was a large part of why our day went so smooth and will truly go out of her way to make your wedding day perfect!"

We chose Brooke to capture our Colorado elopement and she did exactly that and more. She made it easy to plan our day out with locations and timelines so that we could focus on ourselves. We decided last minute to change our afternoon/evening elopement to a 6am sunrise one so beat the heat of the day. Brooke accommodated us without hesitation and even created a new timeline for us so that we knew where to be for the perfect sunrise. She was kind and understood what we wanted in terms of our elopement and we are so grateful to have her capture the day. Our photos turned out beautiful and truly helped us relive the day. I would recommend Brooke to anyone wanting their special day photographed.

Brooke not only photographed our mountain elopement beautifully, but she put so much thought into the details and knew all of the answers the questions I didn’t even know to ask. She really puts a lot of thought into each photo and brings her expertise while still remaining very open to what we wanted and ideas we had. She even helped pick the perfect spot for us and advised us on the logistical details like securing a reservation at the mountain lake where we wanted our ceremony. She is SO easy to work with and very friendly and chill. My husband and I are super awkward in front of a camera but she made it so natural and easy - and the shots came out better than we could have imagined.

Brooke is many things; talented, calm, flexible, experienced/ knowledgeable, patient, incredibly responsive, organized, resourceful in a pinch, supportive, creative, professional yet a blast to work with, and goes above & beyond w her clients. Our wedding was a spectacular dream and we couldn't be more grateful that she made that single day last forever. Whether she's photographing nature or an intimate event, her pictures tell a story of peace, love, whatever your vision may be. We couldn't recommend her more and we look forward to booking with her for all of our vow renewals, seasonal and family pictures for as long as she'll have us.

Working with Brooke was a dream come true! Before we even met, my husband Brent and I were impressed by her portfolio. After meeting, we were even more convinced that her photography skills and knowledge, and her fun and easygoing personality were exactly what we were looking for in an elopement photographer. Brooke was able to take our vision and facilitate everything so that it worked out beautifully, especially when it came to finding the perfect location (the incredible mountains surrounding Ouray). Throughout the entire planning process, she was honest and flexible, and made it clear that her goal was for us to be 100% happy. In the end, her creativity and our happiness totally shine through in every single photo.

"Throughout the entire planning process, she was honest and flexible."

I can't begin to express my gratitude for the intimacy and beauty behind Brooke's photographs. In capturing our wedding day, she went above and beyond to document our story, our families, and the depths of our love in ways that I'll forever be grateful for. Brooke has an eye for not only capturing the adventure and magic of your love, but deeply connects with your personal story, understands your relationship, and then gives that back in the most incredible way. She is truly an artist and tells your story in an authentic and creative way for you to look back on for years to come. We are forever grateful to Brooke for spending the time to get to know us, our story, and capturing the memories that we'll relive for years to come.

“If you're contemplating which photographer to go with, THIS IS YOUR SIGN TO CHOOSE BROOKE!!!! She is so so so talented and was able to capture our elopement exactly how I pictured and wanted! We eloped in Ridgway, CO this past September and she was so helpful figuring out picture locations, recommendations of timeline for the day, and just made the whole day feel so smooth. She schedules multiple check ins, phone calls, etc., leading up to the big day to ensure everything is as you want it. Brooke has such a calming, down to earth presence and is one of those awesome people you feel like you've known forever after just the first time of meeting."
