Planning a Loveland Pass elopement? As a Colorado elopement photographer, it’s one of my favorite spots for a mountain wedding.

Loveland Pass is a winding mountain road about 60 miles west of Denver, surrounded by stunning views, making it the perfect spot for an outdoor elopement.

In this guide, I’ll cover everything you need to plan your day. From permits and weather, to a sample timeline and where to stay; let’s get into it.

What Is Loveland Pass?

Loveland Pass is a high mountain pass on US Highway 6 in Colorado. It’s on the Continental Divide in the Rocky Mountains at 11,990 feet.

The pass sits between Arapahoe Basin and Loveland Ski Area, and the summit is above the treeline. This gives you wide, open views with nothing blocking the mountains, making for one of the most beautiful Colorado elopement locations.

Loveland Pass is ideal for an intimate elopement, with easy access, space to explore, and no venue fees. It’s also close to several cute mountain towns if you’re planning an elopement getaway. If you’re planning an adventurous elopement or something more relaxed, there’s something for every couple.

Loveland Pass Conditions & Road Closures

While Loveland Pass is beautiful year-round, there are considerations when planning a winter elopement. Road closures can happen due to snowstorms and high winds, which you can track on CDOT’s website, plus road closures due to events.

I typically recommend planning your elopement for summer or fall to avoid closures and get the best weather. There are also many other nearby incredible elopement locations if a backup plan is needed. As a local elopement photographer, I help couples choose their ideal location and time of year to help ensure things go as planned.

Weather at High Elevation

Loveland Pass is often cooler than nearby towns due to its high elevation. Many couples love a summer elopement here because of the nice temperatures, even during peak afternoon hours. No matter the time of year you choose, plan for cooler weather and bring layers to stay comfortable.

Backup Locations Near Loveland Pass

If things don’t go as planned, there are many stunning locations nearby to keep in your back pocket. Breckenridge is about half an hour away and has many beautiful elopement locations, including Lake Dillon and Officer’s Gulch. Lake Dillon is a large freshwater reservoir surrounded by mountains, whereas Officer’s Gulch is a quaint hidden gem off the interstate that offers captivating forest pines and water features.

Loveland Pass Elopement Permits & Rules

One of the best parts about getting married at Loveland Pass is how simple it is. You usually don’t need a permit, and intimate weddings are free.

Here’s what you need to know about permits and rules:

  • Cost – Free
  • Permit – Not required for non-commercial groups under 75 people
  • Recommended group size – 15 people or fewer, since parking is limited
  • Setup – No arches, altars, chairs, or decorations
  • Tosses – No flower petals, confetti, rice, or birdseed
  • Access – Don’t block trails, parking spots, or other visitors
  • Dogs – Leashed pets are allowed
  • Leave No Trace – Protect the space and leave it as you found it

Permit details are accurate as of fall 2026. Policies can change, so contact the ranger district for the latest information.

Best Time of Year for a Loveland Pass Elopement

The best season to elope at Loveland Pass is July through September. You’ll get the warmest temps, clear roads, and the most daylight. My favorite time is early September on a weekday when the crowds are gone, and you can have a more intimate experience.

Here’s what to expect throughout the year:

  • Summer (June–August) – The most popular season. Wildflowers peak in July, and temps are the mildest. Snow can linger into June, and afternoon storms are common.
  • Fall (September–October) – Golden aspens, crisp air, and fewer people. Aspens turn gold in the valleys below in late September. The first snow often comes in early October.
  • Winter (November–March) – Heavier snow, colder wind, and frequent road closures. It’s a fun option for a snowshoe elopement, if you enjoy the season and can stay flexible.
  • Spring (April–May) – Still full winter in the area. Expect snow, wind, and busy ski traffic.

How to Get Legally Married in Colorado

Colorado is one of the easiest states for eloping. You can get a marriage license from any Colorado county clerk, don’t need an officiant or witnesses, and can sign your own marriage license.

Colorado Marriage License

Here’s how the Summit County Clerk and other Colorado counties handle licenses:

  • Both partners must apply in person at a Colorado county clerk’s office
  • A license from any Colorado county works statewide
  • You must be 18 or older with a valid photo ID
  • The license costs about $30 (Summit County charges $39, including three certified copies)
  • The license is valid for 35 days from the date of issue
  • Summit County requires an appointment, so book ahead
  • Return your signed license to the same clerk within 63 days of your ceremony

Self-Solemnization in Colorado

Self-solemnization means a couple legally marries themselves without an officiant. Colorado is one of the few states that allows this. You don’t need witnesses either. You and your partner sign the license, fill in the date and location, and return it. Some couples even have their dog sign it!

Note: If you’d like an officiant, I’m also ordained. I can lead your ceremony and take your photos.

Loveland Pass Elopement Timeline Example

There are so many incredible ways to spend your special day in Loveland Pass. My packages cover half-day, full-day, and multi-day elopements to fit your ideal experience.

Here’s an example of a full-day Loveland Pass elopement:

  • Before sunrise – Wake up early and get ready at your cute Airbnb or cabin rental.
  • Sunrise – Exchange vows on the Continental Divide as the sun starts to rise.
  • Early morning – Hike and explore the area for photos with sweeping mountain views.
  • Mid-morning – Enjoy a celebratory picnic breakfast with coffee, pastries, and a champagne toast.
  • Late morning – Head back to town to relax, nap, or read letters from loved ones.
  • Afternoon – Enjoy a fun activity like paddleboarding, riding a gondola, or soaking at a hot spring.
  • Evening – Freshen up, then have a romantic dinner with your new spouse.
  • Sunset – Share your first dance on the pass with music from a small speaker.
  • Nighttime – Stargaze and toast your marriage under the mountain skies.

Every timeline is flexible, and I love working with couples to create the perfect plan, based on the season and activities you love the most.

  • Ride a historic train or gondola through the mountains
  • Shop, eat, and drink in a nearby mountain town
  • Spend the night in a cozy cabin or mountain lodge

Where to Stay for Your Loveland Pass Elopement

There are many resort lodges, cabins, hotels, and boutique inns around the area. For example, the mountain resort town Keystone is the closest to Loveland Pass. Dillon, Frisco, and Georgetown are also within a 30-minute drive.

No matter where you stay, it’s best to book early for summer and ski season.

“Brooke was the perfect choice for our wedding day! We had a micro wedding at Sapphire Point in August. I had never been to Sapphire Point and Brooke was so helpful suggesting vendors, picture locations, parking, marriage license info etc. She was so kind and helpful before and during the whole process and was a large part of why the day went so smooth. She does so much more than just show up and take pictures, Brooke will truly go out of her way to make your wedding day perfect! The photos are gorgeous and I keep getting so many compliments! I truly cannot recommend her enough!”

"Brooke was a large part of why our day went so smooth and will truly go out of her way to make your wedding day perfect!"

We chose Brooke to capture our Colorado elopement and she did exactly that and more. She made it easy to plan our day out with locations and timelines so that we could focus on ourselves. We decided last minute to change our afternoon/evening elopement to a 6am sunrise one so beat the heat of the day. Brooke accommodated us without hesitation and even created a new timeline for us so that we knew where to be for the perfect sunrise. She was kind and understood what we wanted in terms of our elopement and we are so grateful to have her capture the day. Our photos turned out beautiful and truly helped us relive the day. I would recommend Brooke to anyone wanting their special day photographed.

Brooke not only photographed our mountain elopement beautifully, but she put so much thought into the details and knew all of the answers the questions I didn’t even know to ask. She really puts a lot of thought into each photo and brings her expertise while still remaining very open to what we wanted and ideas we had. She even helped pick the perfect spot for us and advised us on the logistical details like securing a reservation at the mountain lake where we wanted our ceremony. She is SO easy to work with and very friendly and chill. My husband and I are super awkward in front of a camera but she made it so natural and easy - and the shots came out better than we could have imagined.

Brooke is many things; talented, calm, flexible, experienced/ knowledgeable, patient, incredibly responsive, organized, resourceful in a pinch, supportive, creative, professional yet a blast to work with, and goes above & beyond w her clients. Our wedding was a spectacular dream and we couldn't be more grateful that she made that single day last forever. Whether she's photographing nature or an intimate event, her pictures tell a story of peace, love, whatever your vision may be. We couldn't recommend her more and we look forward to booking with her for all of our vow renewals, seasonal and family pictures for as long as she'll have us.

Working with Brooke was a dream come true! Before we even met, my husband Brent and I were impressed by her portfolio. After meeting, we were even more convinced that her photography skills and knowledge, and her fun and easygoing personality were exactly what we were looking for in an elopement photographer. Brooke was able to take our vision and facilitate everything so that it worked out beautifully, especially when it came to finding the perfect location (the incredible mountains surrounding Ouray). Throughout the entire planning process, she was honest and flexible, and made it clear that her goal was for us to be 100% happy. In the end, her creativity and our happiness totally shine through in every single photo.

I can't begin to express my gratitude for the intimacy and beauty behind Brooke's photographs. In capturing our wedding day, she went above and beyond to document our story, our families, and the depths of our love in ways that I'll forever be grateful for. Brooke has an eye for not only capturing the adventure and magic of your love, but deeply connects with your personal story, understands your relationship, and then gives that back in the most incredible way. She is truly an artist and tells your story in an authentic and creative way for you to look back on for years to come. We are forever grateful to Brooke for spending the time to get to know us, our story, and capturing the memories that we'll relive for years to come.

“If you're contemplating which photographer to go with, THIS IS YOUR SIGN TO CHOOSE BROOKE!!!! She is so so so talented and was able to capture our elopement exactly how I pictured and wanted! We eloped in Ridgway, CO this past September and she was so helpful figuring out picture locations, recommendations of timeline for the day, and just made the whole day feel so smooth. She schedules multiple check ins, phone calls, etc., leading up to the big day to ensure everything is as you want it. Brooke has such a calming, down to earth presence and is one of those awesome people you feel like you've known forever after just the first time of meeting."
