Among the Pines Photography

As an elopement and wedding photographer, Sapphire Point Overlook is easily one of my favorite venues. At almost 10,000 feet elevation, it offers picture-perfect mountain scenery. It’s also one of the most easily accessible Colorado elopement venues.

Sapphire Point Overlook is in the small town of Dillon, Colorado, just outside of Breckenridge, and it’s an incredible location for an intimate wedding. Below, I’ll help you plan your special day with details on how to reserve the venue, guidelines, the best time to get married, and more.

How to Book Your Sapphire Point Overlook Wedding

You can book Sapphire Point Overlook for your wedding venue online at Recreation.gov. Four three-hour time slots are available each day. While you can book and pay for multiple slots if you want more time, three hours is typically enough for having your ceremony and taking photos.

Reservation times are released at 8 AM MST six months in advance. For example, if you want to get married on November 1st, you’d reserve your time on May 1st. Sapphire Point is an incredibly popular wedding location in Colorado, and reservations can fill up quickly, so book your time as soon as possible.

Note: Sapphire Point Overlook is expected to close in September and October of 2025 for renovations.

If you’d like help deciding which time of day is best for the vibe and pictures you’re going for, you can book your photographer before reserving the venue. I love chatting with couples about their wedding day vision and offering personalized suggestions!

Sapphire Point Overlook Wedding Cost

As one of the best places to elope on a budget, the cost to reserve Sapphire Point Overlook is $128. This covers a 3-hour time slot for the day-use area, which accommodates up to 30 people.

When eloping, you should also consider other expenses, such as photography, attire, and activities. Typically, a small outdoor wedding at a venue like Sapphire Point Overlook costs up to a few thousand dollars.

Sapphire Point Overlook Wedding Guidelines

When getting married at Sapphire Point Overlook, you’ll want to keep the following guidelines in mind:

  • Reservation confirmation – You’ll need to bring your reservation to your wedding to present if asked. You’ll also need to display your reservation confirmation letter on the dashboard of the two vehicles in your designated parking spaces.
  • Non-exclusive site – The space isn’t private, so other people can access the ceremony site and the surrounding area. I recommend getting married in the morning or evening during the week to avoid crowds.
  • Music – Acoustic music is allowed only if it can’t be heard more than 150 feet away, and music amplification isn’t permitted.
  • Decorations and other materials – All decorations must be free-standing and removed as soon as your wedding ends, and you can’t throw any objects, like flower petals. Chairs are also no longer permitted, but your photographer can guide your guests on where to stand prior to the ceremony.
  • Food and drinks – You may not bring food and drinks into Sapphire Point, so you’ll want to have your reception or celebratory dinner elsewhere after your wedding. There are many great places nearby in Breckenridge.
  • Pets – This is the perfect place for a dog-friendly wedding. Pets are welcome, as long as they’re leashed!
  • Parking – You’ll get two dedicated parking spots for vehicles up to 20 feet long. You’ll need to shuttle additional guests to Sapphire Point

If you’re hoping to get married somewhere that allows you to have your own decorations, food, and drinks, check out other small wedding venues in Colorado.

When to Get Married at Sapphire Point Overlook

You can have your Sapphire Point Overlook wedding any time of year. All seasons offer a unique experience and gorgeous scenery!

  • Winter – Have a magical winter wonderland wedding surrounded by snow-capped mountains and icy lakes. While winter is beautiful, it can be very cold, so you’ll want to dress accordingly. The trail to the wedding site can be more difficult to navigate in the snow, so you’ll need to wear appropriate shoes.
  • Spring – While spring is a great time of year for fewer crowds, the weather can be unpredictable. There may still be snow and cold weather, or it could begin to warm up, especially in late spring.
  • Summer – The lush green scenery is gorgeous during summer, and couples who want a warm weather wedding prefer this time of year. That said, this is a popular time of year to get married at Sapphire Point Overlook, so it’s best to plan for a weekday and book as soon as possible.
  • Fall – I love fall weddings in Colorado, especially at Sapphire Point! The weather and scenery are beautiful, with subtle yellow aspens filling the mountainside across the lake – making for the perfect backdrop for a crisp fall wedding.

Tips for Getting Married at Sapphire Point Overlook

I’ve worked with many couples to help them plan and capture their weddings in Colorado. Here are some of my best tips to make the most of your wedding day experience!

  • Accommodations – If you’re planning a wedding getaway and need to stay near the venue, Frisco and Breckenridge are the main areas nearby. There are many accommodations, including hotels and Airbnbs, plus other things to do.
  • Plan accordingly – Sapphire Point Overlook is a popular location, so it’s best to plan for a time when the area may be least busy. The first reservation time is 6 AM, which is best for a more private ceremony.
  • Keep it small – Sapphire Point Overlook can accommodate up to 30 people. However, the area is small, so I recommend limiting your guest list to close loved ones. You can always celebrate with more people after your wedding!
  • Weather considerations – As with any outdoor wedding, the weather can be unpredictable when getting married at Sapphire Point. I recommend bringing a jacket and rain gear just in case.
  • Marriage license – If you plan to get legally married in Colorado, you’ll need to apply for your marriage license online before your wedding, then go to any Colorado County Clerk’s Office to pay for and receive your license. You can officiate your own wedding as self-solemnization is legal in Colorado.
  • Enjoy the day – The best part about having a small wedding or elopement is that you can have a stress-free experience. Make the day about you and your spouse, and enjoy special moments together, like having a first look, writing personalized vows, and enjoying a fun activity together.

“Brooke was the perfect choice for our wedding day! We had a micro wedding at Sapphire Point in August. I had never been to Sapphire Point and Brooke was so helpful suggesting vendors, picture locations, parking, marriage license info etc. She was so kind and helpful before and during the whole process and was a large part of why the day went so smooth. She does so much more than just show up and take pictures, Brooke will truly go out of her way to make your wedding day perfect! The photos are gorgeous and I keep getting so many compliments! I truly cannot recommend her enough!”

"Brooke was a large part of why our day went so smooth and will truly go out of her way to make your wedding day perfect!"

We chose Brooke to capture our Colorado elopement and she did exactly that and more. She made it easy to plan our day out with locations and timelines so that we could focus on ourselves. We decided last minute to change our afternoon/evening elopement to a 6am sunrise one so beat the heat of the day. Brooke accommodated us without hesitation and even created a new timeline for us so that we knew where to be for the perfect sunrise. She was kind and understood what we wanted in terms of our elopement and we are so grateful to have her capture the day. Our photos turned out beautiful and truly helped us relive the day. I would recommend Brooke to anyone wanting their special day photographed.

Brooke not only photographed our mountain elopement beautifully, but she put so much thought into the details and knew all of the answers the questions I didn’t even know to ask. She really puts a lot of thought into each photo and brings her expertise while still remaining very open to what we wanted and ideas we had. She even helped pick the perfect spot for us and advised us on the logistical details like securing a reservation at the mountain lake where we wanted our ceremony. She is SO easy to work with and very friendly and chill. My husband and I are super awkward in front of a camera but she made it so natural and easy - and the shots came out better than we could have imagined.

Brooke is many things; talented, calm, flexible, experienced/ knowledgeable, patient, incredibly responsive, organized, resourceful in a pinch, supportive, creative, professional yet a blast to work with, and goes above & beyond w her clients. Our wedding was a spectacular dream and we couldn't be more grateful that she made that single day last forever. Whether she's photographing nature or an intimate event, her pictures tell a story of peace, love, whatever your vision may be. We couldn't recommend her more and we look forward to booking with her for all of our vow renewals, seasonal and family pictures for as long as she'll have us.

Working with Brooke was a dream come true! Before we even met, my husband Brent and I were impressed by her portfolio. After meeting, we were even more convinced that her photography skills and knowledge, and her fun and easygoing personality were exactly what we were looking for in an elopement photographer. Brooke was able to take our vision and facilitate everything so that it worked out beautifully, especially when it came to finding the perfect location (the incredible mountains surrounding Ouray). Throughout the entire planning process, she was honest and flexible, and made it clear that her goal was for us to be 100% happy. In the end, her creativity and our happiness totally shine through in every single photo.

"Throughout the entire planning process, she was honest and flexible."

I can't begin to express my gratitude for the intimacy and beauty behind Brooke's photographs. In capturing our wedding day, she went above and beyond to document our story, our families, and the depths of our love in ways that I'll forever be grateful for. Brooke has an eye for not only capturing the adventure and magic of your love, but deeply connects with your personal story, understands your relationship, and then gives that back in the most incredible way. She is truly an artist and tells your story in an authentic and creative way for you to look back on for years to come. We are forever grateful to Brooke for spending the time to get to know us, our story, and capturing the memories that we'll relive for years to come.

“If you're contemplating which photographer to go with, THIS IS YOUR SIGN TO CHOOSE BROOKE!!!! She is so so so talented and was able to capture our elopement exactly how I pictured and wanted! We eloped in Ridgway, CO this past September and she was so helpful figuring out picture locations, recommendations of timeline for the day, and just made the whole day feel so smooth. She schedules multiple check ins, phone calls, etc., leading up to the big day to ensure everything is as you want it. Brooke has such a calming, down to earth presence and is one of those awesome people you feel like you've known forever after just the first time of meeting."
