A Crested Butte wildflower elopement is one of the most magical experiences. Wildflowers covering the mountains and meadows all summer, alpine lakes, and aspen groves create a stunning backdrop for your special day.

As a Colorado-based elopement photographer, Crested Butte is one of my favorite places to photograph. It’s also perfect for couples who want a “just us” experience to explore and have an intimate ceremony.

In this guide, I’ll cover the best timing and locations for a Crested Butte wildflower elopement, plus helpful planning tips.

Best Time to Elope in Crested Butte

Wildflower season in Crested Butte runs from late June through early August.

Late June into early July is the start of the bloom. While flowers are less abundant during this time, the meadows are gorgeous, and there are fewer crowds.

Mid-July through early August is peak bloom. Mountains and meadows are filled with vibrant purple, pink, yellow, and blue flowers. The 10-day Crested Butte Wildflower Festival is also during mid-July, which can be a fun experience before or after your elopement.

Why Elope in Crested Butte During Wildflower Season

Known as the wildflower capital of Colorado, Crested Butte is one of the most beautiful places to elope in the U.S. The gorgeous scenery surrounded by wildflowers during the summer feels like something out of a movie. It’s also one of the best locations for adventurous couples who enjoy hiking, off-roading, or simply exploring various landscapes.

Crested Butte Wildflower Elopement Locations

One of my favorite things about Crested Butte is how many hidden gem wildflower locations there are. I love helping couples find a secluded spot or head to one of these more well-known locations.

Kebler Pass

Kebler Pass is known for its massive aspen groves and meadows covered with wildflowers. The dirt road winds through some of the most scenic terrain near Crested Butte, with plenty of pull-offs for a private ceremony. It’s also a great option if you want an easy, accessible location without much hiking involved.

Emerald Lake

Emerald Lake is a turquoise alpine lake surrounded by dramatic peaks and wildflower-covered slopes. It’s one of the most photogenic elopement locations near Crested Butte. It’s also pet-friendly if you want your dog to join you for your special day.

Lake Irwin

Lake Irwin is a secluded alpine lake surrounded by dramatic ridgelines and dense wildflower meadows. The long drive in makes this spot feel more private than other more popular Crested Butte wildflower elopement locations. There are also nearby campsites, making it perfect for couples planning a camping elopement

Woods Walk & Peanut Lake

This trail system is managed by the Crested Butte Land Trust and is conveniently located only a few minutes from downtown. Wildflowers line Wood Walk during the summer, and Peanut Lake is a gorgeous backdrop. Couples looking for a short hike and stunning photos love this spot!

Slate River

Just outside town, the Slate River winds through wildflower meadows, with the mountains rising in the background. It’s one of the best locations for an easily accessible sunset elopement. It’s also fun for adventurous couples with activities like kayaking and paddleboarding.

Washington Gulch or Gothic Road

Gothic Road cuts through one of the most flower-filled valleys near Crested Butte, with the stunning Elk Mountains in the background. This is a great option for couples who want big mountain views without a long drive from town. The road also leads to the Gothic townsite, with trails like Judd Falls and Copper Creek for a fun hiking elopement surrounded by wildflowers.

How to Elope in Crested Butte

Plan the perfect Crested Butte wildflower elopement with these helpful tips:

  • Hire a photographer familiar with the area – Someone who knows Crested Butte can help with location scouting, permits, and timeline planning, so you can focus more on enjoying the experience and less on logistics.
  • Get your marriage license early – Visit any Colorado County Clerk’s office to apply. It costs around $30, requires a valid photo ID, and you can use it anywhere in the state. Colorado has no waiting period, so same-day marriage is possible.
  • Consider self-solemnization – In Colorado, you can legally marry yourselves without an officiant. This makes for a unique experience, and some couples even have their dog sign their marriage license.
  • Check permit requirements for your location – Some land around Crested Butte is a part of the Gunnison National Forest, so commercial photography or larger weddings may require written authorization. I handle this process for the couples I work with.
  • Plan around elevation and weather – Keep in mind Crested Butte sits above 8,800 feet, and mountain weather can vary. Pack layers and comfortable shoes with good traction, especially if you’re planning a hiking elopement.
  • Follow Leave No Trace guidelines – Protect Crested Butte’s natural beauty by reducing waste and leaving your location better than you found it.
  • Enjoy the special moments – Whether it’s sharing personalized vows, hiking to your ceremony location, or having a first dance in nature, there are so many ways to make new memories with your love.

“Brooke was the perfect choice for our wedding day! We had a micro wedding at Sapphire Point in August. I had never been to Sapphire Point and Brooke was so helpful suggesting vendors, picture locations, parking, marriage license info etc. She was so kind and helpful before and during the whole process and was a large part of why the day went so smooth. She does so much more than just show up and take pictures, Brooke will truly go out of her way to make your wedding day perfect! The photos are gorgeous and I keep getting so many compliments! I truly cannot recommend her enough!”

We chose Brooke to capture our Colorado elopement and she did exactly that and more. She made it easy to plan our day out with locations and timelines so that we could focus on ourselves. We decided last minute to change our afternoon/evening elopement to a 6am sunrise one so beat the heat of the day. Brooke accommodated us without hesitation and even created a new timeline for us so that we knew where to be for the perfect sunrise. She was kind and understood what we wanted in terms of our elopement and we are so grateful to have her capture the day. Our photos turned out beautiful and truly helped us relive the day. I would recommend Brooke to anyone wanting their special day photographed.

Brooke not only photographed our mountain elopement beautifully, but she put so much thought into the details and knew all of the answers the questions I didn’t even know to ask. She really puts a lot of thought into each photo and brings her expertise while still remaining very open to what we wanted and ideas we had. She even helped pick the perfect spot for us and advised us on the logistical details like securing a reservation at the mountain lake where we wanted our ceremony. She is SO easy to work with and very friendly and chill. My husband and I are super awkward in front of a camera but she made it so natural and easy - and the shots came out better than we could have imagined.

Brooke is many things; talented, calm, flexible, experienced/ knowledgeable, patient, incredibly responsive, organized, resourceful in a pinch, supportive, creative, professional yet a blast to work with, and goes above & beyond w her clients. Our wedding was a spectacular dream and we couldn't be more grateful that she made that single day last forever. Whether she's photographing nature or an intimate event, her pictures tell a story of peace, love, whatever your vision may be. We couldn't recommend her more and we look forward to booking with her for all of our vow renewals, seasonal and family pictures for as long as she'll have us.

Working with Brooke was a dream come true! Before we even met, my husband Brent and I were impressed by her portfolio. After meeting, we were even more convinced that her photography skills and knowledge, and her fun and easygoing personality were exactly what we were looking for in an elopement photographer. Brooke was able to take our vision and facilitate everything so that it worked out beautifully, especially when it came to finding the perfect location (the incredible mountains surrounding Ouray). Throughout the entire planning process, she was honest and flexible, and made it clear that her goal was for us to be 100% happy. In the end, her creativity and our happiness totally shine through in every single photo.

I can't begin to express my gratitude for the intimacy and beauty behind Brooke's photographs. In capturing our wedding day, she went above and beyond to document our story, our families, and the depths of our love in ways that I'll forever be grateful for. Brooke has an eye for not only capturing the adventure and magic of your love, but deeply connects with your personal story, understands your relationship, and then gives that back in the most incredible way. She is truly an artist and tells your story in an authentic and creative way for you to look back on for years to come. We are forever grateful to Brooke for spending the time to get to know us, our story, and capturing the memories that we'll relive for years to come.

We eloped in Ridgway, CO this past September and she was so helpful figuring out picture locations, recommendations of timeline for the day, and just made the whole day feel so smooth. She schedules multiple check ins, phone calls, etc., leading up to the big day to ensure everything is as you want it. Brooke has such a calming, down to earth presence and is one of those awesome people you feel like you've known forever after just the first time of meeting."
